Waiting on God’s Promises

(Read the previous devotion here.)

Genesis 16:1–6

This passage shows that Sarai and Abram did not have a strong faith in God’s timing for them to have a child. Because they could not see God’s promise fulfilled, they took the matter into their own hands: Sarai asked Abram to conceive a child with Hagar, her slave girl. They decided to do what God seemingly wouldn’t. The wrong decision brought trouble when Sarai got jealous of the slave girl, making her run away with the son Ishmael.

Abram and Sarai should have waited patiently for God’s promises, which of course, is hard to do. How easy it is to act irrationally when we’re waiting.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, help us to trust You and increase our faith, because You will determine our destiny. Guide us to have patience and wait for your promises. Even if they are not fulfilled right away, they will not arrive late. Amen.
