Hebrews 9:23–28
This passage tells us that we, the “copies of the heavenly things,” were performing rites to cleanse ourselves from sin that were insufficient. The actual heavenly things required much better sacrifices. Because of this, there was an endless repetition of sacrifices to make ourselves clean.
This old system of repetition was broken when Christ offered himself as the ultimate sacrifice. He did not come as the high priest does, offering blood that is not his own. If he were to do that, he would have to do it repeatedly and eternally, as the blood of animal sacrifices is not enough. Instead, Christ came into the world and sacrificed himself—a perfect being—once and for all, to take away the sins of many. This sacrifice is without expiration and limitations.
We know today that in Christ, we are saved, and when he returns a second time, salvation is coming to those who are waiting for him.
Prayer:
Dear God, thank you for breaking the cycle of our insufficient offerings and sacrificing yourself for our sins. You are great, holy, and loving. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
