(Read the previous devotion here.)
Historically, every time a new high priest was chosen, he was chosen from among the common people, so he was able to empathize with the common problems people faced. In addition, those who were chosen didn’t just decide that they were going to become high priests, but were instead selected by God.
In chapters 4-5 of Hebrews, we are reminded that Jesus was able to empathize and sympathize with the common people because he too was one of them (one of us). He was a person living on Earth. He could understand the everyday issues people faced, such as hunger, sadness, and joy. Jesus understands our strengths and our weaknesses.
Because we know he understands, we shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help. Jesus will help us through our troubles when we approach him through prayer and thoughtfulness.
We may also be called upon to help others when we see with the eyes of God. He picks us because we can use our empathy to help others through similar issues we ourselves have faced.
Be confident to seek the help you need, and be prepared to perform your duty for others should God call upon you to do so.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, we ask you to give us the strength to seek understanding from those called upon to help us. Give us the courage and empathy to help others in their struggles. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
