Isaiah 30:15–18
Isaiah chapter 30 teaches us of the plight of the Israelites. When faced with Assyrian aggressors, they failed to listen to the Lord and trust in His plan. Instead, they sought the temporary shade and protection of Egypt, relying on the Pharaoh for immediate security.
The Lord told them to return to God, to rest and to trust in Him, but the Israelites were stubborn. They thought they knew better than God. But without God behind their actions, their enemies were fast. And without their trust in God, the Israelites were scared. Indeed, one thousand would be bested by one.
How often do we fail to listen to God? How often do we think we know what’s best without any supplication or prayer? When we fail to trust in God’s plan—when we try to have our way instead of the Lord’s—we open ourselves up to needless fear and frustration.
But it is a mistake to seek temporary shade at the expense of God’s will. When He tells us to rest and reflect on His Word in the face of adversity, we rest and reflect. We must not run. Or else our enemies will be swift.
We must not forget the Lord’s promise: despite our hubris, despite thinking we know best, despite trying to control, God is just and wants to be gracious. He is literally waiting for us to return to Him, to rest and trust in Him. How truly blessed are all those who wait for Him.
Prayer:
Gracious God, forgive us for the times we are separated from you. We are returning to you now, ready to listen so that we may be saved by your mercy. We trust in Your plan and ask for the strength to abide by it always.
